What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, yet extremely powerful hands-on form of treatment, becoming increasingly recognised for helping to improve conditions that have not been resolved through conventional treatment.
Because it is so gentle CST is suitable for every age, from new-born babies, to the elderly and all stages in-between. It is a complete therapy in itself, and can also be used to complement and enhance other therapies.

Craniosacral therapy developed from the work of an American osteopath, Dr William Sutherland in the early 1900s. He discovered intrinsic movements of the bones in the head and his further research revealed a seperate, subtle rhythm (Craniosacral rhythm) in the body from the cerebro-spinal fluid. As a result of detailed clinical observation it has become clear that these movements, which can be measured with delicate scientific instruments, are a direct expression of health and offer a way of working with the physical as well as the more subtle aspects of life. The Craniosacral rhythm is also known as the Breath of Life.

How Can CST Help Me?

The Craniosacral system affects the nervous, vascular, musculosketetal, lymphatic, endocrine and respiratory systems, so can help the whole body on its way back to health. Another important aspect of CST is that it deals directly with connective tissue (fascia). Fascia wraps around every structure and organ in the body, creating a 3-Dimensional web that holds the entire body together. Think of having the human body wrapped entirely in clingfilm-if one part of the clingfilm is twisted or pulled, it will have an effect on other parts of the body, pulling tighter or causing a distortion to the body as a whole.
When fascia has been distorted, from an injury, disease, stress, or a postural problem, it will cease to move freely, causing symptoms of pain (often the origin of pain may be coming from somewhere different - ie known as referred pain).
Like a spring under pressure the tissues of your body have an inherent ability to self-correct. With skilled help the tissues can unwind and release restrictions that may of been holding painful symptoms, sometimes for many years.

What Can I Expect In A Session?

After taking a full case history you will be treated fully clothed and usually lying down.
You may experience a deep sense of relaxation and letting go. Through the gentle contact you may feel heat, tingling sensations, pulsations of energy throughout the body, a sense of lightness, or of increased gravity, or even an array of colours at different intervals. Each individual will be different, and often each treatment will feel different.

What Conditions Can It Help?

CST can help a wide range of conditions (see conditions successfully treated) but please contact me if you are not sure.
